Un bambino di cinque anni che si ostina a chiedere alla mamma dov'è finito papà e perché non torna più a casa. Le mani di un ragazzo innamorato che tremano scosse dalla rabbia in una gabbia, un attimo prima della rivolta. E il limbo di un uomo che da ex prigioniero si prende cura degli amici ancora dietro le sbarre, contando i giorni che mancano alla loro uscita. Sono le storie di Kabbour, Nizar e Abderrahim. Tre nomi per raccontare le vite che stanno dietro alle statistiche della macchina delle espulsioni. Così la regista Alexandra D'Onofrio prova a ribaltare l'estetica della frontiera. Affinché i numeri del Viminale tornino a essere uomini e donne in carne e ossa. Con una storia che va oltre il Cie, che ha un prima e un dopo, un dentro e un fuori la gabbia. E con un dato universale, che sia l'amore, la paternità o la solitudine, in cui tutti noi ci possiamo identificare per avere la certezza che nel 2012 viaggiare non è e non può essere un reato.

Bogusa does not know how to explain to her little Tareq that his father will not come back home. Therefore she decided to take him to Casablanca, so that they can be together for a while. Kabbour takes them around his neighbourhood, where he grew up as a boy, and yet now those very streets appear foreign to him. And he wants to go back home. To his home, in Abruzzo where he first arrived when he was only 11 years old. It is there where he studied, worked and where he married and had a child. It is there where he lived until the carabinieri picked him up from his house in order to repatriate him back to Morocco. With a piece of paper in his pocket which in the name of the Italian law forbids him to live with his own family.

We always do all we can to build unbridgeable gaps between “us” and “them”. They run away from hunger, war and desperation. They are refugees, illegal immigrants. That is why, as far as they are concerned, we never think of normal things. Of desires, of youth’s follies, of thirst for adventures or, why not, of love. You would never think, for example, that what triggered the most violent riot at the identification and expulsion centre of Chinisia, Trapani, was a beautiful and moving love story. We got wind of it by chance. So we decided to follow the story all the way and to make a short film of it. With the aid of an audio recorder, a camera and the collection of videoclips shot with their mobiles by Winny and Nizar, the protagonists of the film.

The identification and expulsion centre (Cie) in Turin is not easy to miss. It is stuck right in the middle of several blocks of flats. Hundreds of people in Turin every morning look out from their balconies onto the cages and curse the day when the prison spoiled the reputation of the neighbourhood. Abderrahim instead climbs on the balconies to greet from above his former cell mates. And he tries to do his best for them. He interviews them on behalf of a local radio station, does some shopping for them and takes part in the protests against the centre. Hoping that his friends will not be expelled, but that , like Amir, Hassan and Mahmoud, they will be released, waiting for better luck.

A five year old child who keeps on asking his mother about his father’s whereabouts and why he is not coming back home. The hands of a young man in love which shake out of anger closed in a cage, moments before the riot. And the limbo condition of a man who as a former inmate looks after his friends who are still behind the bars, counting the days still missing until their release. These are the stories of Kabbour, Nizar and Abderrahim. Three names which tell the lives of those who lie behind the statistics of the expulsions machine.
In this manner, the director Alexandra D'Onofrio tries to turn over the aestethics of the borders. So that the figures of the Ministry of the Interior may become once again men and women in the flesh. With a story which goes beyond the Cie (identification and expulsion centre), with a past and a future, inside and outside the cage. And with a universal feeling, be it love, paternity or solitude, with which we all can identify in order to have the certainty that in 2012 travelling is not and cannot be a crime.

L'amore ai tempi della frontiera

Facciamo sempre di tutto per frapporre distanze incolmabili tra un “noi” e un “loro”. Fuggono dalla fame, dalla guerra, dalla disperazione. Sono profughi, rifugiati, clandestini. E così finisce che non pensiamo mai alle cose normali. Al desiderio, alla follia della gioventù, al gusto dell'avventura e perché no all'amore. Chi l'avrebbe detto, ad esempio, che dietro alla più violenta rivolta del centro di identificazione e espulsione di Chinisia, a Trapani, ci fosse una bellissima e commovente storia d'amore? Noi ci siamo arrivati un po' per caso. E abbiamo deciso di seguire la storia fino in fondo e di farci un film. Con un registratore audio, una macchina fotografica e l'archivio dei video girati con il cellulare da Winny e Nizar, i due protagonisti del film.

A Torino il centro di identificazione e espulsione (Cie) non passa inosservato. É piantato in mezzo a un perimetro di condomini. Centinaia di torinesi ogni mattina si affacciano dai loro balconi sulle gabbie e maledicono il giorno in cui la prigione ha rovinato la reputazione del quartiere. Abderrahim sui balconi invece ci sale per salutare dall'alto gli ex compagni di cella. Dopo essersi fatto cinque mesi al Cie, gli sono rimasti più amici dentro che fuori. E per loro cerca di fare il possibile. Li intervista dai microfoni di una radio locale, gli porta la spesa, partecipa ai presidi contro il Cie. Nella speranza che non vengano espulsi, ma che come Amir, Hassan e Mahmoud siano rilasciati, aspettando tempi migliori.

Papà non torna più

Bogusha non sa come spiegare al piccolo Tareq che suo padre non tornerà più a casa. Così ha deciso di portarlo a Casablanca, per farli almeno stare un po' insieme. Kabbour li porta in giro nel suo quartiere. Qui ha passato l'infanzia, eppure oggi in quelle strade si sente straniero. E vuole tornare a casa. A casa sua, in Abruzzo, dove è arrivato che aveva solo 11 anni. È lì che ha studiato, ha lavorato, si è sposato e ha avuto il bambino. Ed è lì che viveva fino a quando i carabinieri sono andati a prenderlo a casa per rimpatriarlo in Marocco. Con in tasca un foglio di carta che in nome della legge italiana gli vieta di vivere con la sua famiglia.
