ATHENS, 22 march 2011 - Authorities are looking for three immigrants who fell into the sea as they were being transferred from a sinking wooden boat onto a ship off the Ionian island of Paxoi. The three men fell as they were climbing onto a cargo ship that had come to the rescue of the sinking boat late on Monday. Another 113 people were successfully transferred from the small vessel.

Authorities believe that the 30-meter long boat had set sail from Igoumenitsa in northwestern Greece and was heading to Italy. They were alerted to the fact it was beginning to take on water when someone on board called the coast guard.

Three coast guard patrol boats and a helicopter are taking part in the search and rescue operation.
